Skin Care
Skin Care & the Media
Skin care is, by most people, a major concern. This is not really surprising when we consider how important our outward appearance has become. The old saying "You can't judge a book by it's cover" holds true but is rarely considered. Too many people consider poor skin (acne etc.) is a sign of poor hygiene or poor diet and shy away from direct facial contact when confronted with an Acne scarred person. How unfair and rude but, if we are honest with ourselves, most of us would have done it at some times in our lives - even if we suffer from such afflictions ourselves!
Why is this so? Well is it any wonder? Skin care is big business and if everybody didn't care how they looked their profits would dissappear overnight! This is unlikely to happen but the insecurities of big business and the advertising and marketing agancies ensures that we are all under extreme pressure to have "perfect skin"The only time we see a spotty teenager selling a product is when that product is the latest treatment for acne or some other skin care product.
Think further and you will realize that even the biggest stars of Hollywood dread the appearance of a zit, especially with the uptake of HD television which exposes the stars skin together with open pores, blackheads, zits and all the effects of natural ageing. Just recently the British pop star Robbie Williams had his concert in Leeds UK recorded in High Definition and broadcast to 24 countries live. Little room for editing (evidenced by his clumsy fall to the ground!) and therefore little room for adjustments to the schedule but Robbie took a fair amount of time out to explain that an open sore on his lip was made by a cigarette rather than "some strange sexually transmitted disease". Who cares? His fans still think the sun shines from his private parts and care little of a tiny blemish on his face but it is clear that it was of great concern to Robbie himself - poor lad!
However I am sure that we can all appreciate and even empathize with him. Nearly every waking hour we are bombarded with perfect skin, from television to billboards, from leaflets to glossy mags they all contain images of perfect people. In our battle to have that young fresh and clean look ourselves we spend a small fortune on skin care products. We subject ourselves to invasive procedures and latest crazes and developments nomatter how crazy they sound. Sadly the truth is often that there is no truth in the advertising literature and the product is little more effective than a handful of lanolin.
Another area of great interest is natural health and organic produce but we have only a small handful of products on the market that are truly natural. Even when a product is clearly labelled and advertised as "natural" closer inspection reveals that there are chemical additions to the product. Often they have little to do with skin care and are often preservatives.
Luckily there are many web sites out there specializing in natural skin care with recipes for us to produce our own skin care products. Not only is this approach to our skin care regime far cheaper it is also far healthier.
