Pewter: Pewter is also known as "antique silver". Pewter is a metal alloy, traditionally a mixture of tim (between 85% and 96%), and copper and/or lead. Traditionally used in the making of tankards and other drinking/eating ware, but only the highest quality pewter must be used for such items (lead is rarely used in such items these days) as lesser quality pewter contains a higher percentage of lead (which is very harmful if digested). The lesser quality pewter is often used in jewelry and other items not associated with eating or drinking. Pewter is a high quality, low cost alternative to precious metals and often coated in a more expensive metal such as silver (the higher the tin content the more silver the appearance). Beware, older German steins may contain lead - more recent ones do not.
