Orthodox Medical doctors treat an illness while viewing the body as a mechanism regulated by scientific law. Once the ilnness has been identified it is treated, mainly by the use of chemical drugs, and onmce the illness is gone the patient is considered cured. Rather differently natural health treats the human body, and illness, in a holistic way treating the body as a holistic organism controlled, and influenced by, our minds. A well body is considered a well balanced body whereas a body which is ill is considered to be unbalanced. The way to then treat the illness is to remove this imbalance and restore the body to full health.
In natural health the mind is considered to play a crucial and inseperable role in restoring health. All external factors are considered before a complete assessment of the body is made. This approach seems far more logical to the almost old-fashioned view, that these factors do not influence our health. In recent years orthodox medical practioners have started to consider external factors and the effects upon the body. Stress appears to be a major influence in our health and it is now common to hear people say something along the lines of"this damn cold, I had it coming though, I was really run down after a heavy week in the office".
Natural Health is also refered by many as alternative health, holistic health, alternative medicine and natural medicine. However all of these titles refer to the group of treatments and techniques mentioned at the top of this article. As mentioned in other areas of this site I have had some experience of these treatments and, in each and every case, I have gained benefit from their use. However I have never used hypnotherapy as a form of treatment but, in my distant past, I had great fun hypnotising folk for the entertainment of myself, friends and others. I was continually amazed at the power of this technique and the anaesthetic properties blew everyone's minds but I never once considered a practical use for it. That is until I started to be asked by people if I would help them.
Using only books from the local library I read up a little more about hynotherapy and other natural health techniques. I then decided that I would give it a try. At first it was little things that really couldn't be measured. I helped one guy improve his darts game, he was really very good but every time he entered a competition his nervousness destroyed his game, after the hypnosis sessions he said that his game had improved greatly. I then helped a couple of people stop smoking but I then began to realise just how powerful hypnosis was and how foolish I had been in using it for entertainment without training. Furthermore I decided that if I wanted to help more people I would have to get training. I made a few enquiries and I was approached by another friend whose brother had been educated and suggested a college. I phoned them and they explained that I would soon be able to supplement my income while studying by treating people. Then they hit me with the big one - it was going to take YEARS to become fully qualified to their standards! No wonder they had such a good reputation but I am afraid that I could just not face it so I never did hypnosis again. However, over the years, I have learnt to respect those who offer this service and I sometimes get frustrated with the attitude of other, small minded, people who scoff at it. Like many areas of natural health hypnotherapy still struggles to get complete acceptance in modern orthodox medicine.
