Diamonds are a girls best friend! Plain and simple you can't go wrong if you buy the love of your life a sparkling diamond or, in most cases, any good quality, fine jewelry will suffice. However, if you know your partner well and specifically their tastes you may score extra points by going the extra distance and purchase a unique piece of antique jewely. There are several periods to watch for (listed below) but my favorite is the Art Deco period which can still throw up a few spectacular bargains for the keen eyed. The Art Nouveau period has some unique qualities that stand out omongst the crowd and some of the antique brooches I have seen can only be described as astounding. When you start moving further back in time the prices seem to rise for the finer pieces of jewelry and especially for items of gold and silver jewelry where a knowledge of hallmarks is advantageous.
