Alternative Medicine
Those of us who claim that we do not practice any form of alternative medicine or therapies have missed out considering all the simple remedies that we apply at home. Home remedies and homeopathic medicine have become popular over the years as an alternative to prescription drugs. Alternative Medicine is also known as "complementary medicine" and can often be used alongside prescription drugs. However great care must be taken and medical advice sought as mixing the wrong drugs can be very dangerous.
Integration of complementary or alternative medicine in nursing (with therapies such as acupuncture, herbal supplements and other natural remedies), is becoming increasingly common. After extensive clinical trials and research in a variety of alternative therapies and treatments it has been found that many remedies are extremely effective. Often alternative medicine can work where all other treatments have failed. It is therefore surprising that Complementary and Alternative medicine is not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine.
Alternative medicine is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products which includes such things as acupuncture; chiropractic; herbalism; Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); mind/body medicine; bodywork; naturopathy; homeopathy; holistic medicine; reiki and more. However the alternative health practitioner often has studied and practiced such things as endocrinology; neurology; pharmacology; pulmonology; geriatrics; obstetrics; and most other health practices as well.
Today, students may choose from a vast variety of alternative medicine courses and degree programs that not only involve holistic healing but also in-depth studies in philosophy; botanical medicine; naturopathic medicine; communications; Oriental medicine; medical biochemistry; homeopathic medicine; self-healing; nutrition and detoxification; immunology; macronutrients; physical medicine; Chinese Medicine; and many more diverse classes.
Where conventional medicine focuses on the symptoms whereas alternative medicine tends to be "holistic", where an individual's health is considered as a whole. As western medicine increasingly understands alternative medicine, through testing and investigation, more and more elements of holistic medicine are accepted into the mainstream. Osteopathy: Was originally a form of alternative medicine based on manipulation of the joints but is now genrally accepted by conventional medicine.
